The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in diverse methods, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
