Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
