Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
